Frequently Asked Questions

Will Michelin launch any other lines of shoes and boots?
A: Michelin is exploring the possibility of expanding its current range of industrial and occupation footwear. Future ranges may include hiking, walking, rubber boots for children, and casual shoes for men and women. Details of new ranges will be announced on the Michelin Footwear site.
What are the similarities between the design of the sole and the sculpture of a tire?
A: Where appropriate, the outsole design is inspired by that of a tire tread. For example, the Pilot Sport series was developed as a result of the Pilot Sport tire tread, as it features a high performance sole in a lower profile.
Are the compounds of the sole the same as that of a Michelin tire?
A: No. The compounds are developed specifically for footwear. Although they have been done so using the experience and knowledge reference of tire compound technology. There are similarities in the need for grip, longevity of wear and slip resistance. However, footwear and tires vary greatly in how performance is measured; therefore, the compounds are custom-made for footwear.
Where are the shoes manufactured?
A: All manufacturing takes place in audited and approved factories in Asia and the Dominican Republic. This is the case with most shoe manufacturers today.
What kind of testing has been done and what are the benefits of a Michelin sole?
A: Michelin products are tested to the applicable standards for usage. During development they are checked for quality, durability and grip at independent laboratories. Product testers trial samples and prototypes and provide feedback on the various features of the shoes and their corresponding benefits.

Most attention is given to testing the performance of the shoes in terms of their internal comfort and the external grip and outsole performance.
What distinguishes Michelin footwear from competitor brands?
A: Michelin footwear utilises the same sculpture and compounding resources as Michelin tires. This enables ground-breaking new developments where the tread hits the ground.

The outsoles on our boots and shoes utilize the same traction properties as used in Michelin high performance tires. Over 100 years of experience on your feet! The primary benefit of a Michelin outsole is the combined durability and grip.
